CONCEPTUAL KEY

Sun

  • The ultimate symbol of light, heat and life, whose rays represent the celestial and spiritual influence on earth;

  • Emblem of the highest religious and mythological entities (Apollo, Buddha, Jesus Christ, Ra, Vishnu, …) as well as monarchs, emperors, and rulers;

Illustrating the final moment when the sun hovers over the horizon, “Sun Catcher” explores similar themes from the artist’s other work “Cosmic Fisherman”, where the evolution of the human species is metaphorically expressed using the symbolism of the sun, light and fire (objects/elements considered to be evolutionary engines or triggers that have accompanied humanity since its origin).

This image highlights the legends of the popular hero of Polynesian mythology – Maui – responsible for raising the Hawaiian islands from the deep ocean, and various other stories about the path and movement of the sun.

According to the story, Maui set out at night to the cave where this celestial body rested, capturing it and ordering it to slow down its course, thus making the days longer than before.

An identical parallel is created with the myth of Prometheus (the Titan who stole fire and gave it to humanity), referring to the Platonic metaphor expressed in “The Republic”, where this star is translated as a symbol of truth or intellectual enlightenment.
